Saint-Émilion wines are known for their soft and elegant character, compared to the powerful style of the Médoc. The vineyards consist primarily of Merlot, supplemented with Cabernet Franc. This produces wines with ripe red fruit and a supple structure.

Saint-Émilion has its own Grand Cru classification, which is revised every ten years. Currently, four estates are classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A: Cheval Blanc, Château Ausone, Château Pavie, and Château Angélus. In addition, Château Figeac, Château Canon, and Clos Fourtet are among the best houses within the Classé B.

The hills of Saint-Émilion provide the setting for wines with a refined and ripe profile. Merlot Bordeaux provides roundness and accessibility. Cabernet Franc Bordeaux adds freshness and aromatic depth.

This region offers a rich variety of wine styles, ranging from elegant drinking wines to complex, age-worthy wines with considerable depth. The Grand Cru Saint-Émilion classification defines the quality. The highest status, Premier Grand Cru Classé A, is reserved for a select few.
