History

The origins of Léoville-Poyferré

The story of Léoville-Poyferré begins in the 17th century, when the vast estate of Château Léoville was one of the largest and most influential properties in the Médoc. Over the course of the 18th and 19th centuries the estate was divided among various heirs, giving rise to three celebrated names: Léoville-Las-Cases, Léoville-Barton and Léoville-Poyferré. In 1855, during the famous Bordeaux classification, Château Léoville-Poyferré was awarded the title of Deuxième Grand Cru Classé, confirming its exceptional quality and reputation.

The Cuvelier family: vision and renewal

Since 1920, Léoville-Poyferré has been owned by the Cuvelier family, an influential wine family from northern France. Under the leadership of Didier Cuvelier, and since 2018 his niece Sara Lecompte-Cuvelier, the estate has undergone an impressive programme of modernisation. With the assistance of the celebrated oenologist Michel Rolland, Léoville-Poyferré developed a style that combines power with silky softness, a symphony of depth and finesse that has earned international acclaim.

Today Léoville-Poyferré is regarded as a modern icon of Saint-Julien, uniting its classic roots with contemporary allure.
