History
The origins of Léoville
The name 'Léoville' refers to one of the oldest wine estates in the Médoc, established in the 17th century. Originally it was one large property that was later divided into three separate châteaux: Léoville-Las-Cases, Léoville-Poyferré and Léoville-Barton. In 1826 the Irish merchant Hugh Barton acquired the estate, having previously purchased Château Langoa-Barton. With this acquisition he laid the foundations for a wine empire that remains in the hands of the same family to this day, a rarity in Bordeaux.

The Barton family is known for its integrity, consistency and commitment to quality. Unlike many other top châteaux, Léoville-Barton has never changed hands. This rare continuity explains why the estate has remained true to its classic style: powerful, refined and impeccably balanced. Today Anthony Barton's daughter Lilian Barton-Sartorius leads the estate, carrying forward a family legacy of almost two centuries. Under her vision Léoville-Barton has gained a more modern cellar, without compromising the traditional character that makes this wine legendary.
