Origin

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is located in the Pauillac appellation, in the heart of the Médoc, to the south of the village of Saint-Lambert. The vineyards lie on the high gravel terraces of the Gironde, renowned for their exceptional drainage and heat retention. The estate covers 90 hectares, of which 58 hectares are planted with vines. The position on the so-called "Grand Puy", a gravel hill, gives the wine both its name and its character: concentrated, mineral and powerful. Pauillac is often regarded as the backbone of the Médoc. Within this prestigious appellation, Grand-Puy-Lacoste stands out for its aristocratic style: less opulent than Mouton, more subtle than Latour, but with a classic depth that remains true to its terroir.

History

18th century: the birth of a legend

The history of Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste goes back to the end of the 17th century, when the Lacoste family developed the estate on the heights of Pauillac. The name refers to the "Puy", the sand and gravel hill on which the vineyards lie. The estate gained an early reputation for the exceptional quality of its terroir. In the 18th century, Grand-Puy-Lacoste was included in the list of the finest wines of the Médoc, long before the official 1855 classification.

19th century: official recognition

During the 1855 classification, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste was ranked as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé, officially recognising it as one of the great houses of Bordeaux. The wines were already celebrated at the time for their pure Cabernet Sauvignon character and their capacity to age beautifully.

20th century: the Borie family

In 1978 the estate was acquired by François-Xavier Borie, a scion of one of the most celebrated wine families in Bordeaux. Under his leadership the château was fully renovated, the vineyard replanted and the cellar modernised. Since then, Grand-Puy-Lacoste has built an unrivalled reputation as one of the most reliable and honest expressions of Pauillac, a wine that is true to its origins and excels year after year in balance and precision.

21st century: modern craftsmanship

Today the estate is still led by the Borie family, with François-Xavier and his daughter Emeline Borie at the helm. Their vision is clear: respect for tradition, combined with modern oenological insights. The result is a wine that is at once classic and contemporary, a paragon of Pauillac in its purest form.
