History of Château Montrose

Château Montrose was founded in 1815 by Marin Mège, who transformed the estate from a modest vineyard into one of the most renowned crus of Bordeaux. As early as 1855, Montrose received recognition as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé, a confirmation of the exceptional quality and potential of the château. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries the estate remained true to its traditions while simultaneously modernising. Since the 1990s Château Montrose has been managed by the Bouygues family, who have further strengthened the heritage with innovative yet respectful viticultural techniques. This combination of tradition and progress secures Château Montrose a prominent position in the international wine world and makes it a popular wine among both collectors and investors.

Terroir and location

The terroir of Château Montrose forms the foundation of the wine's powerful and characterful profile. Located in the northern part of the Médoc, within the AOC Saint-Estèphe, the vineyard rests on a unique soil structure of sand with quartz and iron-bearing clay. This composition gives the wine its pronounced minerality and structure. The microclimate is strongly influenced by the proximity of the Gironde, which ensures a stable temperature and a gentle humidity. This slows ripening and contributes to the complexity and concentration of the grapes. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot results in wines that are powerful and structured, yet always remain in balance.
