Origin

Château Giscours is located in the Margaux appellation, in the southern Médoc, on the western bank of the Gironde. The vineyards cover approximately 100 hectares and benefit from the iconic gravel terraces that have made Margaux so famous. The proximity of the river creates an ideal microclimate: the air currents moderate temperatures and protect the vineyard from frost, while the gravel-rich soils provide perfect drainage. These natural conditions produce grapes of remarkable concentration and aromatic finesse. The wines of Giscours are known for their velvety texture, deep structure and subtle floral notes, a signature typical of Margaux, but with the extra power of the southern terroirs.

History

14th century: medieval origins

The first records of Château Giscours date back to the 14th century, when the estate was a fortified manor known as "Giscors". Viticulture only really began in the 16th century, when the Saint-Simon family cleared the land and planted the first vines.

19th century: the golden age

Under the leadership of Pierre Skawinski, a visionary winemaker, Château Giscours reached its peak in the 19th century. He introduced innovative farming methods and improved cellar techniques. During the 1855 classification, Château Giscours was recognised as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé, a testament to its reputation and quality. The wines of this period were celebrated for their deep colour, ripe fruit and balanced structure.

20th century: adversity and revival

In the early 20th century, Giscours, like many other estates, went through difficult times due to the phylloxera plague, wars and economic crises. A new period of flourishing only began in 1952, when the estate was taken over by Nicolas Tari, a producer from Algeria with a passion for Bordeaux. He restructured the vineyards, renewed the facilities and restored Giscours' reputation. The wines from the 1960s and 1970s are today regarded as classics.

21st century: modern perfection

Since 1995, Château Giscours has been owned by Eric Albada Jelgersma, a Dutch entrepreneur. Under his leadership the estate was thoroughly modernised, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Today Giscours is overseen by Alexander van Beek, who has strengthened the international reputation of the château through a perfect balance between tradition and innovation.
