Origin

Château Clerc Milon is located in the Pauillac appellation, in the heart of the Médoc, to the north of Bordeaux. The vineyards lie in the village of Milon, just a few hundred metres from the celebrated neighbours Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Lafite Rothschild.

The estate covers approximately 41 hectares, spread across the characteristic gravel terraces of the Gironde. This position ensures optimal sun exposure and natural drainage, which promotes the concentration and aromatic purity of the grapes.

The terroir, combined with careful vinification, produces wines that unite power, elegance and aromatic finesse, a characteristic that sets Clerc Milon apart within the Pauillac appellation.

History

18th century: the origins

The estate was founded in the early 18th century by Jean-Baptiste Clerc, who acquired land in the vineyards of Milon, at the time owned by the abbey of Vertheuil. The wine quickly gained recognition for its quality and was awarded the status of Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

19th and 20th centuries: challenges and rebuilding

Like many Bordeaux estates, Clerc Milon also went through periods of adversity. The phylloxera plague, the world wars and economic crises all left their mark. By the mid-20th century the estate had fallen into a period of decline, until 1970, when it was purchased by Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild: rebirth of a classic

Following the acquisition, a thorough restoration of both the vineyards and the cellars began. Baron Philippe and his daughter Baroness Philippine de Rothschild transformed Clerc Milon into one of the most modern estates in the Médoc.

Under their stewardship quality was refined year after year, with respect for tradition but making use of the latest technologies. In 2011 a completely new winery was built, an architectural masterpiece that perfectly reflects innovation and elegance.

21st century: modern prestige

Today Clerc Milon is managed by the Compagnie Baron Philippe de Rothschild, with oenologist Philippe Dhalluin as technical director. The wines are among the most stable and distinctive Grand Crus of Pauillac, celebrated for their balance and expressive style.
