Origin

Château Cantemerle is located in Macau, on the southern border of the Haut-Médoc appellation, to the south of Margaux. This strategic position, close to the Gironde and just twenty kilometres from the city of Bordeaux, offers ideal conditions for viticulture.

The vineyards extend across Cantemerle's iconic 90-hectare estate, of which approximately 87 hectares are planted with vines. The proximity of the river creates a mild microclimate, allowing the grapes to undergo a long, even ripening process. This produces wines with fine tannins, floral notes and a remarkable balance between freshness and depth.

History

12th to 16th centuries: early origins

The origins of Château Cantemerle go back to the 12th century, when the estate served as a fortified stronghold on the edge of the Médoc. Viticulture probably began in the 14th century, making Cantemerle one of the oldest wine houses in Bordeaux.

The name "Cantemerle" is derived from the Gascon "Chantemerle", meaning "the song of the blackbird", a poetic reference to the tranquillity and harmony of the estate.

17th century: rise under the Villeneuve-Durfort family

In the 17th century, Cantemerle passed into the hands of the Villeneuve-Durfort family, who restructured the estate and built a reputation as a producer of elegant wines that were popular in Bordeaux and Paris. Their meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar resulted in wines that stood out for their subtlety and refinement, characteristics that continue to define the style of Cantemerle to this day.

19th century: classification and recognition

During the famous 1855 classification, Château Cantemerle was listed as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé. Notably, the estate was only added at the last moment, proof that its reputation was already beyond question.

20th and 21st centuries: recovery and renewal

Over the course of the 20th century Cantemerle went through varying periods of success. In 1981 the estate was acquired by SMABTP, a French insurance company that made large-scale investments to modernise the vineyards and cellars.

Under the leadership of Caroline Artaud, who took the helm in the 21st century, Château Cantemerle has repositioned itself as one of the most consistent and authentic producers of classic Bordeaux.

Vinification

The vinification of Château Cantemerle is a subtle interplay of precision, tradition and sensitivity. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand. In the cellar, the grapes are rigorously selected using optical sorting machines, ensuring that only perfectly ripe berries are used.

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Each parcel is vinified separately, providing maximum control over extraction. The emphasis is on preserving fruit purity and elegance rather than power.

The wine ages for 12 to 16 months in French oak barrels, of which approximately 40% is new oak.

During this period the wine develops its texture and complexity, while the influence of the wood is subtly integrated. The result is a wine with a silky structure, a pure fruit expression and a refined finish.

Structure

The style of Cantemerle is harmonious and refined:

  • medium body
  • velvety tannins
  • lively acidity
  • mineral freshness
  • elegant, long finish

Cantemerle combines the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the floral charm of Merlot, a distinctive style that appeals to lovers of classic Haut-Médoc.

Ageing

Château Cantemerle has excellent ageing potential, particularly in great vintages.

  • Good vintages: 10 to 20 years
  • Top vintages: 25 to 35 years

During bottle ageing the wine evolves towards complex notes of clove, forest floor, violet and truffle, without losing its freshness.
