Origin

Chateau Beychevelle is located in the Saint-Julien appellation, in the heart of the Médoc, between Margaux and Pauillac. The appellation is known as the most harmonious of the Médoc: the wines combine the elegance of Margaux with the structure of Pauillac.

The estate covers approximately 90 hectares of vineyards, spread across perfectly drained gravel terraces on the banks of the Gironde. This position ensures constant ventilation and moderation of the climate, ideal for the slow, even ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The name "Beychevelle" (derived from the French baisse voile, "lower the sails") refers to a fascinating historical detail: when ships sailed past the château, they would lower their sails as a mark of respect to the Duke of Épernon, then owner of the estate and Admiral of France.

History

16th century: aristocratic origins

The roots of Château Beychevelle go back to the 16th century, when the Duke of Épernon, Jean-Louis Nogaret de La Valette, owned the estate. As Admiral of France, he was an influential figure at the courts of Henry III and Henry IV. His residence, the later château of Beychevelle, grew into a symbol of aristocratic refinement.

18th and 19th centuries: flourishing and recognition

In the 18th century Beychevelle began to gain international renown. The wines were exported to England and the Netherlands, where they were highly valued for their elegant structure. During the famous 1855 classification, Beychevelle was awarded the title of Quatrième Grand Cru Classé (Fourth Growth), officially recognising it as a wine of exceptional quality.

20th century: rebuilding and modernisation

In the 20th century the estate was severely affected by the economic crisis and the wartime years, but recovered swiftly thanks to the efforts of the Heine and Achille-Fould families. In 1986 the estate passed into the hands of Grands Millésimes de France, owned by the Japanese group Suntory and the French banking group Crédit Agricole.

Today the estate is led by Philippe Blanc, who has restored the reputation of Beychevelle to great heights through an impressive combination of tradition, precision and innovation.
