Chateau Calon-Ségur
Origin
Château Calon-Ségur is located in the far north of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, in the Médoc. This area, renowned for its deep clay and gravel soils, produces wines of impressive structure, intensity and keeping power. The estate covers approximately 55 hectares of vineyards, which are fully walled, a rarity in Bordeaux. This enclosure creates a microclimate that protects the vineyards against extreme weather and helps the grapes ripen evenly. The style of Calon-Ségur sets itself apart from many other Saint-Estèphes through its balance between power and elegance, its aromatic refinement and its deep, velvety texture.
History
17th century: the origins
The name Calon
refers to the small boats, calones, that were once used to transport wine
across the Gironde. The estate was already mentioned in the Middle Ages, but its reputation began
to grow in the 17th century, when it came into the hands of the Gaspard de Ségur family, one of the
most influential wine families in Bordeaux.
18th century: the era of the Marquis de Ségur
The most celebrated owner was Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, who also owned Château Lafite, Château Latour and later Château Mouton Rothschild. Yet he declared that his heart belonged to Calon, a statement that still appears on the label to this day.
During this period Calon-Ségur earned its reputation as a wine of aristocratic distinction, beloved at the court of Versailles and in the salons of Paris.
19th and 20th centuries: stability and renovation
During the classification of 1855, Château Calon-Ségur was ranked as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries the estate remained largely in the hands of the same families, ensuring stability and consistency of style. In the 20th century the Capbern-Gasqueton family took over, with the most charismatic representative being Madame Denise Capbern-Gasqueton. She led the estate with dedication and elegance until her passing in 2011. Under her stewardship Calon-Ségur grew into a symbol of classic, timeless Saint-Estèphe.
21st century: modernisation under new owners
In 2012, the estate was acquired by Suravenir Assurances, who made substantial investments in modernising the cellars and restructuring the vineyards, without compromising its character. Today Château Calon-Ségur is led by Vincent Millet, who has further refined the quality of the estate with scientific precision and respect for tradition.
Terroir
The terroir of Château Calon-Ségur is exceptional and plays a key role in the character of the wine.
Soil structure
The soil consists of:
- deep gravel, which retains heat and promotes drainage
- clay, which retains moisture during dry periods
- sand and limestone in the subsoil layers
This combination creates ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, which here reaches its most powerful and refined expression.
Microclimate
The walled position creates a unique microclimate that stabilises temperature and reduces the effects of wind. The proximity of the Gironde river prevents frost and promotes a long, even ripening.
Grape varieties
The plantings consist of:
- Cabernet Sauvignon (56%)
- Merlot (35%)
- Cabernet Franc (7%)
- Petit Verdot (2%)
Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, while Merlot provides roundness and softness, an essential element in the balanced style of Calon-Ségur.
Vinification
Harvest
The harvest is carried out entirely by hand. After sorting in the vineyard and in the cellar, the grapes are vinified parcel by parcel, so that the characteristics of each individual plot of terroir can be expressed separately.
Fermentation
Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The process is slow and controlled, in order to preserve the aromatic finesse and natural elegance.
Ageing
The wine ages for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, of which approximately 30% is new oak. The use of new wood is deliberately restrained, so that the essence of the terroir, the fruit, the minerality and the depth, is preserved.
The result is a wine with a robust structure, silky tannins and a subtle, noble touch of oak.

Château Calon-Ségur wine is known for its powerful yet refined style, a wine with heart and soul.

With age the wines evolve towards notes of leather, spice, cocoa and cigar box.
