Saint-Estèphe Wines

Raw in power, magnificent in aging

Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost appellation within the Médoc Bordeaux region. The vineyards are located on Bordeaux's Left Bank, in an area where the soil consists of sandy layers over clay and gravel. This combination produces wines with plenty of structure, firm tannins, and remarkably long aging potential.

The style of Saint-Estèphe is powerful and muscular. Many wines take time to fully develop. They are therefore appreciated by connoisseurs who reward patience with depth and complexity.

Several estates within the appellation are classified as Grand Cru Classé Saint-Estèphe. Among the best-known and most highly regarded are Château Cos d’Estournel, Château Montrose, and Château Calon-Ségur. These estates have made a global name for themselves with wines that span generations.

Buy Saint-Estèphe Bordeaux wine

Those who choose Saint-Estèphe Bordeaux wines are choosing power and character. The dominant grape is Cabernet Sauvignon, supplemented with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. These blends produce wines with plenty of structure, firm tannins, and ripe, dark fruit notes.

The sandy and gravelly clay soils ensure slow ripening and deep concentration. As a result, the best wines from Saint-Estèphe only truly reach their full potential after years of winemaking. Aficionados appreciate this style for its robust character and reliability with extended cellar aging.
